Novelist, children’s author, poet, and naval officer. Alternative signature: Captain Marryat. Born in London. Began working aboard ships at the age of 14 in 1806. Travelled to Spain, the Mediterranean, the West Indies, the East Indies, and North America as a part of his career, and also lived in Belgium, Canada, and the United States. Married Catherine Shairp in January 1819. Became a fellow of the Royal Society in 1819. Appointed Captain in 1825. Awarded the Companion of the Order of Bath in 1826.
