Scottish monarch. Daughter of King James V of Scotland and Mary of Guise. Became Queen of Scotland when she was 6 days old. Betrothed to the Dauphin of France and lived there from 1548 to 1560. Married Francis II on 24 April 1558. Became Queen of France from 1559 to 1560, but returned to Scotland after the death of her husband. Educated at the French court. Learned Latin and French and spoke Scots and English. Married twice more in Scotland: Henry Stewart, Lord Darnley on 29 July 1565, and James Hepburn, Fourth Earl of Bothwell on 15 May 1567. Abdicated her throne in 1567 in favour of her son, James VI. Fled to England in 1568 where she remained under house arrest on the orders of Queen Elizabeth I for the rest of her life.
