Poet, translator, and diplomat. Born in Batavia, Java, Dutch East Indies. Educated in Macau. Spoke several languages including Dutch, Chinese, and Malay. Worked for British consular services in China (1840-1877). Served as an interpreter during the First Opium War, for which he earned an Opium War medal. Married three times, Ellen Gilbert Cooper on 20 October 1847, a second woman in February 1854, and Juliana Tryphena Burningham in 1858. Knighted in 1877. Author of The Foreigner in Far Cathay (1872).
