Working-class poet, folklorist, geologist, Evangelical journalist. From Cromarty, Scotland. After being expelled from school at around the age of 16, Miller became a stonemason so that he could write during the off season. He wrote some poetry but focused on prose, particularly regional, geological, and natural history. While working on his literary career, he also became an accountant so that he could afford to marry. He then became the founding editor of The Witness, an Evangelical Scottish newspaper. Biographical information: ODNB. (KH)
