Poet, playwright, editor, translator, illustrator, and designer. Contributed to the periodical The Dial after becoming friends with Charles Shannon and Charles Ricketts. Also became lifelong friends with W. B. Yeats in 1899. Founded the Literary Theatre Club in 1901 with Charles Ricketts and Florence Farr, which performed plays that he adapted.
