Novelist, short story writer, dramatist, poet, and journalist. Born in County Mayo, Ireland. Moved with his family to London in 1868. Inherited his father's Irish estate when he came of age in 1873. Studied to be an artist in Paris from 1873, returning to London in 1879 when he began working as a journalist and fiction writer. Controversial for his reinvention of novelistic realism, and for his campaign against the circulating libraries. His novels include Vain Fortune (1891), Esther Waters (1894), and Evelyn Innes (1898).
