Poet, educationist, lawyer. Born in Carmarthon, Wales. Educated at Jesus College, Cambridge. In a common-law relationship with his housekeeper, Florence Julia Pollard, which lost him the Poet Laureateship in 1896 following Queen Victoria’s disapproval, after which he seems to have married Florence.
