Sanskritist, philologist, translator. Born in Dessau, Germany. Father was the poet Willhelm Müller. Educated at the University of Leipzig. Changed his surname to Max Müller after moving to England in June 1846. Granted naturalized British citizenship in 1855. Appointed deputy Taylorian professor of modern European languages at Oxford in 1851, and then to the new chair in comparative philology in 1868.
