Novelist and poet. She and her sister Isabella Munro were well known authors in Canada and South Africa during the mid-nineteenth century. The family lived on Drummond Island from 1827-1829, then a contested island between the British and the United States, and moved to South Africa in 1832 to the frontier of colonist and Indigenous Xhosa peoples. Supported her mother and sister with writing after the death of her father in 1841. Published her first novel De Montfort: or, The Old English Nobleman (anonymously) in 1842 at the age of 17. Continued to publish several novels set in both Canada and South Africa. Contributed to Forget Me Not, New Monthly Belle Assemblée, Heath’s Book of Beauty, People’s Journal,United Service Magazine, and Colburn’s United Service Magazine.
