Digital Victorian Periodical Poetry

Poet (writing in Scots and English), prospector, and public servant. Born near Alford, Aberdeenshire. Moved to Aberdeen and worked as a land surveyor (1881-1889). Moved to Johannesburg, South Africa, in 1889 to continue his profession there. Married Edith Rogers in 1895. Enlisted in the Second Boer War in 1899, but was given the position of Deputy Inspector of Mines and eventually the Secretary for Public Works for the Union of South Africa. Received the Companion of the Order of St Michael and St George in 1922. Author of several volumes of poetry including Hamewith (1900). His poetry was collected into one volume, Hamewith and Other Poems (1927). Chambers’s Journal ledger entry for Murray’s In the Gloamin,’ published on 21 January 1893, lists his address as c/o 106 Broomhill Place, Aberdeen (NLS Dep 341/370).
