Poet and politician. Née Chattopadhyay. Born in Hyderabad. Daughter of Aghornath Chattopadhyay and his wife, Baradasundari, also known as Varada Devi. Educated at King’s College, London, and Girton College, Cambridge, on scholarships granted by the nizam of Hyderabad, where she befriended Edmund Gosse and Arthur Symons. Worked in a variety of political roles, eventually being appointed governor of the United Provinces in 1947. Married Dr. Govindarajulu Naidu in December 1898. Biographical information: ODNB. (BGL)
