Gaelic scholar, lawyer, mountain climber, poet and translator. Pseudonym: A. N. Borne at Husabost, Skye. Educated at the University of Edinburgh. In 1865 inspected schools in the Western Isles as part of the Scottish education commission, and also involved in the 1883 Napier Commission into crofters which advocated unsuccessfully for the promotion of Gaelic in schools.
