Poet, theologian, and philosopher. Born in Collingbourne Kingston, Wiltshire. Son
of John Norris, a parish priest, and Elizabeth. Educated at Winchester College and
Exeter College, Oxford, where he learned about Platonism and Cartesian philosophy.
Became a fellow at All Souls College in 1680. Relocated to Newton St. Loe in 1689
and later to Bemerton in 1692 that coincided with his increased literary output, including
critiques of John Locke. Maintained close intellectual ties with Mary Astell and Lady
Mary Chudleigh. Published works on Christian ethics and metaphysics until his death
in 1712, including A Collection of Miscellanies (1687), The Theory and Regulation of Love (1688), and the two-part Theory of the Ideal or Intelligible World (1701, 1704). Biographical information: ODNB. (NM)
