Poet, editor, and Irish nationalist. Born in Dowth, Castle, Ireland. Worked for the newspaper The Argus. Arrested for his political actions as an Irish revolutionary and Fenian in 1866. Sent to work in the penal colonies in Western Australia. Escaped to Boston, Massachusetts on an American whaling ship. Member of the O’Neill invasion of Canada in 1870. Married Mary Murphy on 15 August 1872. Editor of the Pilot. Founder of the Papyrus Club. Author of the volume of poetry In Bohemia (1886).
