Novelist and poet. Born in Scotland 1845 or 1846; died in England. Unmarried. Noted for the poem In the Gloaming (from Poems [1874]), set to music in 1877 and hugely popular. Other volumes include Berthold and Other Poems (1878), Ave (all’ Anima Mia) (1880), A Dream-Alphabet, and Other Poems (1888), In a Wild Garden by the Sea and Other Poems (1908).
