Translator and classical scholar. Alternative signature: W. R. Paton. Born in Old Aberdeen. Son of John Paton and Eliza Deborah (née Burnett). Friends with Oscar Wilde. Educated at Eton College and admitted to Middle Temple but never called to the bar. Married Irene Olympitis in 1885, and the couple briefly lived in Turkey afterwards before returning to Aberdeen and finally settling in Kalymnos. Married Klio Nomikos in 1911 after Irene’s death. Worked as a full time scholar, and publications include a prolific amount of studies and writings on Mediterranean history, most notably five volumes of The Greek Anthology (1916-1918) translated to English.
