Painter and illustrator. Born in Boston. Specialized in genre scenes, hsitorical subjects, religious subjects, figures, and portraits. Moved to Paris in 1873 and studied with Léon Bonnat. Travelled to Egypt and Algiers (1874-1875). Settled on a farm in Auvers-sur-Oise, France. Awarded the Chevalier of the Order of King Leopold, Belgium (1866) and Chevalier of the Légion d’Honneur, France (1894). Helped organize the American art exhibition at the Antwerp World Fair in 1894.
