Poet, linguist, editor, translator (especially from German), surgeon, and geologist. Born in Connecticut. Educated at Yale College. Graduated with a medical degree, but left medicine to become a poet. Contributed to The Microscope. Became the state geologist of Connecticut in 1835 and Wisconsin in 1854.
