Poet and novelist. Born in Paisley, Renfrewshire. Travelled on business to the West Indies to try to become a merchant like his father, but returned to Scotland and became a clerk in a factory and a bank. Married Janet Coxon. Moved to London and became the author of several novels including The Black Watch, published posthumously. Corresponded with William Godwin, Bryan Waller Procter, and John Galt.
