Poet, lawyer, solider, and scholar. Born in Boston, Massachusetts. Learned Hebrew, Latin, and Greek in his youth. Moved to Fort Smith, Arkansas and worked as a teacher. Editor of the Arkansas Advocate. Became a lawyer in 1834. Married Mary Ann Hamilton in 1834. Captain in the Mexican-American War. Learned several Indigenous languages and represented several tribes including the Creeks, Choctaws, and Chickasaws in lawsuits against the United States government, for which he became extremely wealthy. Fought for the Confederacy during the American Civil War and recruited, and armed, many Indigenous tribes as a part of his position as commissioner of Indian affairs. Went into hiding after the war to avoid being arrested for treason, but was pardoned by the President in 1866. Moved to Tennessee and possibly became involved with the Klu Klux Klan. Editor of the Memphis Appeal. Moved to Washington, D.C. in 1868. Joined the Freemasons in 1850 who supported him financially in his later years. Biographical information: Curran Index, ANB. (AC, CC)
