Poet and physician. Born in Edinburgh, Scotland. Son of Alexander Pitcairne and his wife, Janet Sydserff. Educated at Dalkeith School and University of Edinburgh, then later recieved his MD from the University of Rheims. Worked as a physician upon returning to Edinburgh, and was a founding member of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh. Married Margaret Hay circa 1680 and, following her later death, married Elizabeth Stevenson on 8 August 1693. Publications include medical texts and latin poetry, mostly written late in life, translated and published posthumously. Biographical information: ODNB. (AHC, BGL)
