A Song of an Owl.

Bright the moon shone,1

                        When from his hole2

                        Quietly stole3

                        A white owl ;4

                        Very wan5

                        Looked this fowl6

                        As he flew.7

                        What made him flit ?8

                        He’d a purpose in view,9

                        To wit—to woo,10

That was it, nothing new :11

                        And trusting to wit12

                        He proceeded to woo,13

                        Till he won14

                        A bird as white15

                        As e’er flew by night,16

                        With brown eyes bright,17

But as grave as a nun.18

                        Then the two19

                        Sat all the night through20

In eloquent silence, words being few,21

                        For all that they knew22

                        Was Tu-whit and Tu-whoo !23
