Published as the seventh in a series called Scottish Comic Songs, Supposed to be Hitherto Unpublished, but here the series is called Scottish Songs, Not Before Published. A note below the poem indicates that the editors believe the song to be written by the son of the honest East-Lothian farmer Skirving, who wrote the ballad usually called Tranent Muir.
