At War.
Night yields to day, the day yields to the night ;1
The coursing of the orbs is timed so true,2
Light follows darkness, darkness follows light,3
And morning evening, all the seasons through.4
The Spring returns to deck the earth anew,5
Endowed with powers that grim old Winter lacked ;6
The dusk’s preceded by the falling dew ;7
The moon is by the lesser planets tracked.8
All natural things in natural order move :9
But as for me, a counter-current flows10
Through all my soul ; order of peace and love11
Yields to a chaos, wild with griefs and woes ;12
While the harmonious sameness of the days13
Jars my sad heart to tread their trodden ways.14
