Chambers’s Journal ledger indicates that Dr. C. was paid 10s 6d for the poem (NLS Dep 341/368), which were the initials for William Chambers. The headnote explains that this ballad has an unknown author and has some changes, otherwise it would scarcely be fit for singing in modern times, but otherwise, the ancient ditty is preserved. Although the poem is signed W.C., and Chambers was paid for the poem, the changes are taken as editorial and the authorship unsigned. (AC)
