Poet attribution: the preface to the poem attributes the original Sally in Our Alley to Henry Carey, but the poem is signed W. C. at the end; presumably W. C. (William Chambers) wrote the new concluding verse mentioned in the preface. Chambers’s Journal ledger indicates that Dr. C. [William Chambers] was paid 10s 6d for the poem (NLS Dep 341/368). (AC)
