One Swallow maketh not a Summer.

Did she give a tender glance1
When thy tongue refused to speak ?2
Let it not thy bliss enhance,3
Nor for further glances seek ;4
One such look from maiden’s eye5
Is no pledge of constancy.6
Did she call thee fond or dear,7
Sitting dreamily alone ?8
Drive the echo from thine ear,9
Be not tricked by one sweet tone ;10
One such whisper does not prove11
That she yields thee all her love.12
Did she heave a deep-drawn sigh13
When thou bad’st a sad farewell ?14
Did a tear-drop dim her eye ?15
Yield not to the potent spell ;16
One such tear or ling’ring sigh17
Prove not she will love for aye.18
