A man and a woman stand at a counter in a jewellery store. The man holds onto the woman’s extended arm with his left hand and looks at the clerk on the other side of the counter. The man holds his hat in his right hand. The woman uses part of her skirt to hide her face as she extends her hand toward the clerk and leans away from the counter. There is a basket on the ground beside her feet. There is a glass case filled with jewellery on the counter. The clerk reaches over the case and holds the woman’s hand with one of his hands, and uses his other hand to slip a ring onto her finger. A small cushion with additional jewellery sits on the counter beside the glass case. A second glass case is mounted on the wall. It is filled with decorative objects such as plates, jugs, and chalices. This case contains two small curtains which have been pushed to the sides.
