Figure descriptions
A man and a woman sit together in the dark and embrace. They are depicted in profile
view. The man, identified in the
illustration caption as Don Juan, holds the woman’s arm and pulls her in toward his
body. He wears an unbuttoned shirt and a long
overcoat. The woman (identified in the poem text as Haidee) wears a full, off-the-shoulder
gown and a translucent veil. Her shoulder
and back are exposed. The figures gaze into each other’s eyes. There is an urn on
the ground, a table with decorations in the
background, and a lamp hanging from the ceiling. The couple appears to occupy a small
cave. There is a circular entrance to the
left. Beyond the cave’s entrance, the sun is low on the horizon above a body of water.
