Dutch Lullaby.

Wynken, Blynken and Nod one night1
Sailed off in a wooden shoe—2
Sailed on a river of crystal light3
Into a sea of dew :4
‘ Where are you going, and what do you wish ? ’5
The old moon asked the three ;—6
‘ We have come to fish for the herring-fish7
That live in this beautiful sea ;8
Nets of silver and gold have we ! ’9
Said Wynken,10
Blynken11
And Nod.12
The old moon laughed and sang a song,13
As they rocked in the wooden shoe,14
And the wind that sped them all night long15
Ruffled the waves of dew.16
The little stars were the herring-fish17
That lived in that beautiful sea ;—18
‘ Now cast your nets wherever you wish—19
Never afeared are we ; ’20
So cried the stars to the fishermen three :21
Wynken,22
Blynken23
And Nod.24

All night long their nets they threw25
To the stars in the twinkling foam—26
Then down from the skies came the wooden shoe,27
Bringing the fishermen home ;28
’Twas all so pretty a sail, it seemed29
As if it could not be,30
And some folk thought ’twas a dream they’d dreamed31
Of sailing that beautiful sea ;—32
But I shall name you the fishermen three :33
Wynken,34
Blynken35
And Nod.36
Wynken and Blynken are two little eyes,37
And Nod is a little head,38
And the wooden shoe that sailed the skies,39
Is a wee one’s trundle-bed.40
So shut your eyes while mother sings41
Of wonderful sights that be,42
And you shall see the beautiful things,43
As you rock in the misty sea44
Where the old shoe rocked the fishermen three :—45
Wynken,46
Blynken47
And Nod.48
