God’s Music.

Since ever the world was fashioned,1

                        Water, and air, and sod,2

                        A music of divers meaning3

Has flowed from the hand of God.4

In valley, and gorge, and upland,5

                        On stormy mountain height,6

He makes Him a harp of the forest,7

He sweeps the chords with might.8

He puts forth His hand to the ocean,9

He speaks and the waters flow,—10

Now in a chorus of thunder,11

                        Now in a cadence low.12

                        He touches the waving flower-bells,13

He plays on the woodland streams—14

                        A tender song—like a mother15

Sings to her child in dreams.16

But the music divinest and dearest,17

                        Since ever the years began,18

                        Is the manifold passionate music19

He draws from the heart of Man !20
