Poet and classical scholar. Born in East Ruston, Norfolk. Son of Huggin Porson and Ann Palmer. Educated at Eton College as a young prodigy, and later Trinity College, Cambridge, where he took on a fellowship. Lived in London afterwards. Worked as the regius professor of Greek, a role which he was elected to in 1792, and near the end of his life took up a post as principal librarian of the London Institution. Married Mary Lunan (née Perry) on 24 November 1796, but her death the following year greatly affected him, and he never remarried.
