Poet, actor, novelist, playwright, and stage-manager. Born in Kilmacthomas, Co. Waterford,
Ireland. Joined a theatre company at the age of fourteen. Married Anne Gilbert in
1817. Took a break from acting and lived in South Africa for one year (1820-1821).
Returned to England and began acting and working as a stage manager in London. Toured
in the United States (1833-1825, 1837, 1838, 1841). Lost at sea on his return voyage
