Poet. Major literary figure in Enlightenment Edinburgh. Born at Leadhills, Lanarkshire. Originally an apprentice wigmaker, Ramsay opened a shop in Edinburgh and became a burgess in 1710. Studied literature and began publishing in 1706. Member of the Easy Club (founded 1712). Also became a bookseller in 1718 and started a circulating library c.1725. Married Christian Ross on 14 December 1712. Father of the painter Allan Ramsay. Biographical information: ODNB. (KH)
