Poet and political reformer. Pseudonym: Clio. Born Thomas Rickman in The Cliffe, Lewes, Sussex, and adopted Clio as a middle name later on. Son of John Rickman and Elizabeth (née Peters). Educated at Maidenhead, Kent, in an apprenticeship to his brother, a surgeon and apothecary. Worked as a merchant with his father after abandoning his apprenticeship, and later as a bookseller in London. Married Maria Emlyn on 15 April 1783 and, following her death, married Jane Gritham (also Greetham) Wall on 12 March 1791. Author of a wide variety of works including novels, poetry contributed to periodicals, a volume of poetry entitled Poetical Scraps (1803), and his most known work, The Life of Thomas Paine (1819), a biography of his lifelong friend.
