Poet and prose writer. Member of the Confederation group of poets. Born in Douglas, New Brunswick. Cousin of the poet Bliss Carman, and friends with Oscar Wilde and William Sharp. Influenced by Dante Gabriel Rossetti. Educated at the University of New Brunswick. Professor of English and French at King’s College, Windsor, Nova Scotia 1885-1895). Moved to New York in 1897 and then to Europe in 1907, living in London from 1912. Served in the First World War with the British army. Returned to Canada in 1925. Knighted in 1935. Publications include Orion, and Other Poems (1880), In Divers Tones (1886), Songs of the Common Day (1893), The Book of the Native (1896), New York Nocturnes (1898), The Book of the Rose (1903), The Iceberg and Other Poems (1934).
