Poet and banker. Born in Newington Green, Middlesex. Worked as a banker at his father’s request, but was more interested in literature. Contributed to Gentleman’s Magazine and the Edinburgh Review. Travelled to Scotland (1789), where he met Sir Water Scott, as well as France (1791, 1802), and Italy (1815, 1822), where he visited Percy Shelley and Lord Byron. Publications include the poetry volume Italy, which became a best-seller after the 1830 illustrated edition. Biographical information: ODNB. (CC)
