Poet and illustrator. Author of King James’ Wedding and Other Rhymes (1888). The poetic preface to this volume makes clear that the author is Scottish, and the poem is signed “Walls, Shetland, June 1, 1888,” which indicates that Sands may have lived in Shetland. The volume is illustrated by Charles Keene, Harry Christie, and Sands himself. Sands also published Out of the Worlds; or, Life in St. Kilda (second edition, MacLachlan & Stewart, 1878). The Chambers’s Journal ledger entry for Sands’ poem, published on 27 March 1880, gives his address as Ormiston, Tranent (NLS Dep 341/369).(AC)
