Poet, editor, novelist, and Church of Scotland clergyman. Alternative signature: J. Service. Born in Campsie, Stirlingshire. Educated at the University of Glasgow. Editor of the Dumbarton Herald (1857). Married Jessie Bayne on 29 April 1859. Ordained in 1862. Moved to Australia and became the minister at St John’s Presbyterian Church in Tasmania (1866-1869).
