Translator, professor, and literary scholar. Born in London. Educated at St John’s College, Cambridge. Moved to St. Petersburg, Russia, in 1840 to avoid paying his debts. Graduated from the University of St. Petersburg with a teaching license, after which he worked as a tutor. Editor of English Review of Literature. Married Annette Frances Warrand on 15 October 1842. Translated Russian literature and novels, including many works by Alexander Pushkin. Appointed professor of English at the University of St Petersburg in 1851. Biographical information: ODNB. (CC)
