Poet, playwright, theatre manager, and soldier. Son of Richard Brinsley Sheridan and his first wife Elizabeth Ann (Eliza) Linley. Father of Caroline Sheridan Norton. Born in London. Educated at the University of Cambridge. Joined the army and became coroneter of the 10th light dragoons and Commander-in-Chief of Scotland (1803). Married Caroline Henrietta Callander on 21 June 1805. Became manager of the Drury Lane and Lyceum Theatres and authored several plays which were performed there. Appointed the Colonial Treasurer at the Cape of Good Hope, South Africa, in 1813 and moved there with his wife and one of their daughters. Biographical information: ODNB. (CC)
