Playwright, poet, and politician. Born September or October 1751 in Dublin. Son of Thomas Sheridan (1719?–1788), an actor, and Frances Sheridan (1724–1766), a novelist and playwright. Educated at Harrow School. Married Elizabeth Ann (Eliza) Linley (1754–1792), a prominant singer, in 1773. Proprietor of Theatre Royal, Drury Lane. Had an extensive political career and elected MP for Stafford in 1780. Authored plays including The Rivals (1775) in which he introduced the character of Mrs. Malaprop, and popular restoration comedies such as The School for Scandal (1777) and The Camp (1779).
