Poet and wit. Born in Essex. Son of Robert Smith and Maria (née Olier). Educated at Winchester College and at New College, Oxford. Worked as a curate at Netheravon, then a private tutor for Michael Hicks-Beach while travelling, during which time he established the Edinburgh Review with Francis Jeffrey and Francis Horner. Married Catherine Amelia Pybus on 2 July 1800. Publications include sermons and writings on religion and philosophy, as well as essays and poems contributed to the Edinburgh Review.
