Poet, dramatist, novelist, journalist, public lecturer, mountaineer, and surgeon. Born in Chertsey, Surrey. Graduated as a surgeon from Middlesex Hospital in 1838. Set up a practice in London before turning to his literary interests. Contributed to Punch and Bentley’s Miscellany. Became the drama critic of the Illustrated London News. Co-editor of The Man in the Moon (1847-1849). Gave lectures about his travels in Europe, Constantinople, Egypt, and China. Married Mary Lucy Keeley on 1 August 1859.
