Poet and illustrator. Née Bowles. Pseudonym C and Baroness de Katzleben. Born near Lymington, Hampshire into a bilingual French and English home. Educated at the local vicarage. Supported herself by writing after the death of her parents in 1817. Contributed to magazines and illustrated several of her own publications. Married poet laureate Robert Southey on 5 June 1839, with whom she had begun corresponding in 1818. Friends with Anna Eliza Bray, Maria Jane Jewsbury, William Wordsworth, and Mary Howitt.
