Historian, politician, poet, and translator. Born in Walmer, Kent. Educated at Christ Church, Oxford. Married Emily Harriet Kerrison on 10 July 1834. Acceded to the earldom on the death of his father (2 March 1855). Conservative MP for Wootton Bassett (1830-1832) and Hertford (1835-1855). Author of several books on the history of England. President of the Society of Antiquaries (1846-1875). Member of the Royal Commission on Historical Manuscripts (1869-1875).
