Gabrielle Carr,
C.Born in Essex, England. Daughter of Rev. Sir John Page Wood and Emma Caroline Wood. Associated with literary figures George Meredith, Rhoda Broughton, Anthony Trollope, and Edward Bulwyer-Lytton. Married Lieutenant-Colonel Charles Steele in 1858, but returned to her family home after a week and never lived with her husband again, though neither party filed for divorce. Author of several novels including Gardenhurst (1867), So Runs the World Away (1869), and her final publication, Lesbia: A Study in One Volume (1896). Also author of the poetry volume Thoughts Versified (1860), and co-authored Ephemera (1865) with her mother, published pseudonymously as Helen and Gabrielle Carr. Biographical information: Orlando.
