Painter (specializing in historical genre and portraits) and illustrator. Born in Manchester. Elected associate exhibitor at the Old Watercolour Society in 1833 and a member in 1842, before being elected as an associate of the Royal Academy in 1851. Friend of William Makepeace Thackeray and Charles Dickens. Dickens commissioned Stone to paint portraits of his children. Opposed the Pre-Raphaelites. Biographical information: ODNB. (SP)
