Illustrator and printmaker, associated with the Arts and Crafts movement. Born in Old Alresford, Winchester. Studied law at Oxford, but pursued painting. Exhibited at the Royal Academy of Arts and published his first etching books, The Itchen Valley and The Avon in 1881. Influenced by W. A. S. Benson and married his sister, Agnes, in 1883. Co-founded with Benson the Arts Crafts Exhibition Society (1887) and the Fitzroy Picture Society (1893), promoting accessible art. Renowned for church interior designs using sgraffito, stained glass, and mosaics including St Mary’s, Sunbury, and All Saints, London. Elected as Master of the Art Workers’ Guild in 1894, and later exhibited internationally. Biographical information: Grove. (NM)
