Prominent London society hostess, social reformer, novelist, short story writer, editor, poet. Née Lady Millicent Fanny St. Clair-Erskine. Pseudonym: Erskine Gower. Born at Dysart House, Fife. Married Cromartie Sutherland-Leveson-Gower, marquess of Stafford (later fourth duke of Sutherland), when she was seventeen. In 1914, one year after Stafford’s death, she married Percy Desmond Fitzgerald. She divorced Fitzgerald in 1919, and married George Ernest Hawes later the same year, divorcing him in 1925. Worked for the Red Cross in the First World War. Briefly imprisoned after the German occupation of France in 1940, eventually escaping to the United States and returning to Paris in 1945 when the city was liberated.
